The Theatre of Apparitions is Roger Ballen’s haunting exploration of the mind as a house of buried narratives, merging his signature aesthetic with theatrical performance. Inspired by carvings in an abandoned prison, Ballen used spray paint and sharp tools on glass to create primitive, cave-like images where dismembered figures and ghostly shapes emerge. Directors Emma Calder and Ged Haney animated these images into a surreal film with John Webb’s music, blending art and subconscious. Published by Thames & Hudson in November 2016.
